RE: RT 541/40?

Be aware that the 40 is closed between King Creek (entrance to Peter Lougheed Park) and Highwood House in the winter, between 1st Dec and 15 June.

RE: Our costs from Vancouver Island to Yukon then back

Just for comparison I kept some figures for our trip this year 26 foot C class total mileage (Vancouver/Calgary) 4393Km 28 nights Gas 1120L $1500 Ave $1.34/litre Groceries/ Liquor $900 Campgrounds $500 No ferry charges (they are all free on this route of course) I used the Safeway store card for gas wherever possible this gives 3.5 or 7 cents discount per litre. RE: New RV, need a nice campground close by

If you don't need hookups and just to try the new Rv, you could try Rosebud about 80km NE of Calgary or Bow Valley if you want to go west, Wyndom Carseland or Chain Lakes are also within reasonable driving from Calgary.

RE: Maps showing campgrounds

Try MapArt (www.mapart.com). I have a an Alberta Recreation Map from them that shows all the campgrounds in Alberta, they also show golf courses and ski-runs. Since MapArt are based in Ontario I would guess that they have these maps for other provinces. Good luck Trevor

Question for Calgarians about Canada Day

At the end this years trip we will be returning our rented MH to Calgary on 31st June prior to flying out on 2nd July. We have never been in Downtown Calgary on Canada Day before. Question, does anything special take place downtown or is it quiet since all the stores are closed and everyone has gone camping? Only 2 weeks to go!! Trevor

RE: Just to be sure --- Season Pass least expensive option?

You are correct, if you are staying in the parks more than 6 days it is cheaper to get an annual pass. I beleive that the seniors rate only applys to Canadians, but I could be wrong. You can order an annual pass on the 'phone see www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/visit23_E.asp Enjoy your trip. Trevor

RE: Not again please!!!!

I hope this clears away in the next month when I visit, then I will have the opportunity to drink the ice wine! For BC road webcams checkout http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/bchighwaycam/index.aspx

RE: Camping Around Edmonton

You could try Pigeon Lake, it tends to get crowded but is probably OK in May, same applies to Crimson Lake. A bit further if you want quiet, try The Narrows near Stettler (no services here).

Echo Lake Resort

Has anyone stayed at Echo Lake Resort, east of Lumby BC? Any comments about it? Looks good on the website. Is the access road from the west/east paved?

RE: Storage in Vancouver (GVRD)

You did not say whether you were looking for covered storage or not. Probably the best is at Harrison Bay ( I know it's quite a drive from Vancouver) if you want covered, about $100 month power available too. www.harrisonstorage.ca If you don't need covered there are a few in Vancouver I can give you if I can find where I put them on the computer!

RE: Renting a C

I think that your quick calculation from my figures is a little wrong. I could not see how you got to $5000. I would expect to do this trip for around $3300 (a little less if you make a reservation this month) in July including rental, mileage, gas and campground fees. Other costs such as entertainment /eating out will be additional of course, but if you really want to get the experience why not prepare your own meals at the campground, then the costs are the same as being at home. Take the trip and enjoy it.

RE: Renting a C

Hi, I have been renting C class MHs since 1988 and have a lot of info, but here for starters: For a 24' C class expect to pay minimum (in May/June) of around $115 per day, this will at least double in the high season. To this you have to add $50-75 "preparation fee" and a mileage charge of between $0.28 to $0.34 per kilometer payable to the rental company. All the above will have tax added of course. There are some early booking deals available at the moment, which can give you discounts on mileage. Most of these deals will probably disappear at the end of this month. I normally do about 150-170 Km per day (I have lots of time, usually 4-5 weeks since I am retired) and my calculation of average gas consumption is about 24L per 100Km, so you would use about 460L. I usually allow about $18-20 per night for campground fees, I don't use commercial campgrounds since I don't need hook-ups, if you need these facilities allow $25-40. A few tips. Don't let the rental company talk you into "convienience kits" (sleeping bags, pillows, cooking utensils etc.) they will charge $50 per person. Take them from home. Always 'phone the rental company and see if they will do a deal, don't rely on the internet for prices, sometimes they have cancellations or special local deals, I saved $800 in 2006 when I got a 50% reduction in mileage charges! Try the big rental companies first. Canadream www.canadream.com Fraserway www.fraserwayrvrentals.com CruiseCanada www.www.cruisecanada.com Finally, be sure to check insurance/cancellation conditions before you rent. If you need any more info let me know Have a good time Trevor

RE: Highway 93

Don't forget if you intend to stay in National Parks for more than 6 days total, it is cheaper to buy an annual pass, it will cost about $125 but it is valid for many of the parks which have been recommended, Banff, Jasper, Waterton, Glacier, Kootenay and Yoho plus others. Trevor

RE: kelowna BC

Hi. The closest campground to Summerhill is Hiawatha, I have not stayed there, but it is only about 3Km from Summerhill they have hook-ups and is very useful if you have been partaking of the excellent Ice Wine! Take a taxi. www.hiawatharvpark.com Trevor

New route for me Hope/Lytton/Merritt/Princeton

I would like to try a new addition to my route in BC. Hwy 1 from Hope to Spences Bridge then Hwy 8 to Merritt and 5A to Princeton. A few questions, I assume that Hwy will not be too busy in June now that the Coquihalla is in use. Has anyone stayed at Sikhist P.P.? is it noisy (railroad and highway seem to be close). Is Hwy 8 paved, anything interesting to see down here? I have travelled 5A already so I know that it is good with Kentucky-Alleyne p.p ( a little unusual but good campground) just south of Merritt. Thanks Trevor
